Meticulous detail aids in capturing the scene depicted in Matthew 14:30-31. The waves part slightly for Jesus as he reaches to grasp Peter's hand. One of Peter's legs is partially sinking in the foaming water and a wave is about to crash down in the background. Two of St. Peter's fish, a delicacy found only in the Sea of Galilee, ride a wave on the backside. One of these shows a fisherman pulling a net into a boat on calm sea, with the hills of Galilee in the background.
The other relief shows a fishing boat being tossed about in angry seas with storm clouds swirling overhead. Framed, raised-letter plaques quoting the appropriate Bible texts are mounted on the front of the base.
