This sculpture pays respect to women settlers and their struggles as they travelled west over the wagon trails. Faced with a multitude of dangers, many of then gave birth along the trails.

The bond between a mother and child is a strong universal theme that transcends time and place. But in this sculpture the heartwarming close-up of this bond contrasts starkly with the reality of their surroundings.

Beneath the close-up of the mother and child is a vignette, a smaller panoramic view of the same scene. In the scene the mother, her bonnet slung behind her shoulders, sits on an immigrant's trunk as she sings to her baby. A camp fire and kettle are in the foreground and a mule peaks around from the other side of the wagon.

This sculpture was inspired by the birth of Loren and Jeff's first child, Clayton. After feeling the great love a parent has for their children and seeing Loren singing to Clayton, the idea for this sculpture was also born.
